How to Light a Charcoal Grill Properly (No Lighter Fluid)
Lighting charcoal well is the difference between a smooth cook and a smoky, uneven mess. The best method needs no lighter fluid at all.
The best way: a chimney starter
- Fill the chimney with charcoal.
- Put a couple of scrunched newspaper sheets or a natural firelighter underneath and light it.
- Wait 10–15 minutes until the top coals are ashed over and glowing grey.
- Tip them into the grill — all lit, even, and no chemical taste.
No chimney? The pyramid method
Pile charcoal into a mound, tuck natural firelighters into the base, light them, and let the fire spread up through the pile before spreading the coals out.
Why skip lighter fluid
Lighter fluid can leave a chemical taint on food and flares dangerously. Natural firelighters or a chimney give a cleaner burn and better flavour.
When are the coals ready?
- Wait until most coals are covered in grey ash — not still black.
- Spread them for your setup (all across for direct, one side for two-zone).
- Let the grate heat for a few minutes, then start cooking.
